PRÉCENTEUR, s. m. (Jurispr.) proecentor quasi primus cantor est le premier chantre, qu'on appelle aussi grand chantre ou chantre simplement. Le précenteur est ordinairement établi en dignité dans les églises cathédrales & collégiales; il est quelquefois le premier en dignité; dans d'autres endroits il est précédé par d'autres dignitaires: dans quelques églises il a jurisdiction dans le choeur pour tout ce qui regarde le chant. A Paris, le grand - chantre a jurisdiction sur les maîtres & maîtresses des petites écoles. Voyez Chantre. (A)
