AVERRUNQUES, s. m. pl. (Hist. anc.) dans l'antiquité, un ordre de dieux chez les Romains; leur office étoit de détourner les dangers & les maux. Voyez Dieu. Les Grecs appelloient ces dieux A'LECIXAXAXOI ou A'POPOMAI=OI, & leur fête A'POPOMPAI\, quelquefois A'POTROPAIOI.

Les Egyptiens avoient aussi leurs dieux averrunci ou apotropoei, auxquels ils donnoient une attitude menaçante, & quelquefois ils les armoient d'un foüet; Isis étoit une divinité de cette espece, comme l'a fait [p. 870] voir Kircher. Voyez OEdip. AEgypt. tom. III. p. 487. (G)
