MACHRONTICHOS, (Géogr. anc.) c'est - à - dire longue muraille; aussi ce mot désigne les grandes murailles qui joignoient la ville d'Athènes au Pirée; ce fut par la même raison, qu'on nomma du nom de machrontichos, la grande muraille de la Thrace, bâtie par Justinien, avec des moles aux deux bouts, une galerie voûtée, & une garnison pour garantir l'isthme des incursions des ennemis.
