MACARESE, (Géog.) en italien macaresa, étang d'Italie dans l'état de l'Eglise, près de la côte de la mer. Cet étang peut avoir trois milles de longueur, & un mille dans l'endroit le plus large; il est assez profond, fort poissonneux, & communique à la mer par un canal. On pourroit en faire un port utile, mais la chambre apostolique n'ose y toucher, de peur d'infecter l'air par l'ouverture des terres. (D. J.)
