* EMPUSE, s. f. (Mythol. & Divinat.) phantôme sous lequel Hécate apparoissoit à ceux qui l'évoquoient; c'étoit la figure ou d'un chien, ou d'un boeuf, ou d'une femme. On ne voyoit de distinct à l'Empuse que ses parties supérieures, le reste finis<pb-> [p. 599] soit comme ces statues qui ornent nos jardins, & qui n'ont qu'un long pié; & c'est de - là qu'on a fait le mot empuse.
