ADAGE, s. m. (Belles - Lettres.) c'est un proverbe ou une sentence populaire que l'on dit communément. Voyez Proverbe, &c. Ce mot vient de ad & agor, suivant Scaliger, quod agatur ad aliud signandum, parce que l'on s'ensert pour signifier autre chose.

Erasme a fait une vaste & précieuse collection des adages Grecs & Latins, qu'il a tirés de leurs Poëtes, Orateurs, Philosophes, &c.

Adage, proverbe, & paroemia, signifient la même chose: mais l'adage est différent du gnome, de la sentence ou de l'apophthegme. V. Sentence & Apophthegme, &c. (G)
