PHENGITES, (Hist. nat.) nom donné par Agricola & quelques autres naturalistes à un marbre jaune d'une seule couleur.
M. Hill croit que c'étoit un marbre ou un albâtre d'un blanc un peu jaunâtre & transparent, à - peu - près comme de la cire. Il prétend qu'il n'étoit point fort compacte, & que le temple de la Fortune en étoit entierement bâti. Comme ce marbre étoit transparent, le temple étoitéclairé quoiqu'on n'y eûtpoint fait de fenêtres. Selon lui, il se trouvoit en Cappadoce, & il en rencontra encore en Allemagne, en France & en Angleterre, dans la province de Derby. Voyez Hill's natural history of fossils.
