Principe, s. m. (Phys.) on appelle principe d'un corps naturel, ce qui contribue à l'essence d'un corps, ou ce qui le constitue primitivement. Voyez Corps.

Pour avoir une idée d'un principe naturel, il faut considérer un corps dans ses différens états; un charbon, par exemple, étoit une petite piece de bois; par conséquent le morceau de bois contient le principe du charbon, &c. Chambers.
