PORTLAND, pierre de, (Hist. nat.) nom donné par les Anglois à un grès grossier, composé de particules d'un sable très - sensible, d'un blanc sale, pesante & d'un tissu peu serré, dont les parties semblent collées ensemble par un spath luisant: cette pierre ne fait point feu. Son nom lui vient de l'île de Portland en Dorsetshire où il y en a de grandes carrieres. Voyez d' Acosta, Hist. nat. of fossils.
