PORTE - OR, s. m. (Hist. nat.) nom d'un marbre très - estimé, qui est d'un beau noir, & rempli de veines & de taches jaunes comme de l'or. Ses veines sont ordinairement assez fines, & elles se croisent en tout sens; quelquefois on y trouve aussi des veines blanches. Ce marbre étoit connu des anciens, qui l'appelloient marmor thebaicum. Bruckman dit qu'il s'en trouve en Carniole, & Scheuchzer prétend qu'il y en a en Suisse dans le canton de Berne.
