PORT - GREVE, s. m. (Hist. mod.) c'étoit autrefois
le principal magistrat d'un port de mer ou d'une
ville maritime. Ce mot vient du saxon port, un port
ou une autre ville, & geref, un gouverneur; les Anglois l'écrivent quelquefois port - reve. Voyez
Cambden observe que le premier magistrat de Londres s'appelloit autrefois port - greve; Richard I. établit
deux baillifs en sa place; & bientôt après le roi Jean
donna aux citoyens un maire pour leur magistrat annuel.
