PANIUM (Page 11:820)

PANIUM, (Géog. anc.) promontoire d'Europe, sur la côte du Bosphore de Thrace, parallele, selon Pierre Gilles, aux îles Cyanées. Ortelius dit qu'on le nomme aujourd'hui vulgairement Phanorion. Il y a aussi une caverne de Syrie, qui porte le nom de Panium. Elle est située dans la montagne Panéus, près la source du Jourdain; c'est - là qu'Hérode le Grand fit bâtir un temple de marbre blanc en l'honneur d'Auguste, selon le récit de Josephe, antiq. jud. liv. V. chap. xiij. (D. J.)
