Quelques historiens attribuent la fondation d'Oppenheim à Drusus, d'autres aux empereurs Valentinien ou Gratien. Ce qu'il y a de sûr, c'est que du tems de Charlemagne, ce n'étoit qu'un village. Quant au bailliage d'Oppenheim, il n'a que deux places; la capitale qui porte son nom est Ingelheim.
