OAXIS, (Géog. anc.) ville de l'île de Crete dans la côte septentrionale selon Hérodote, l. IV. ch. cliv. Varron dit qu'Oaxe, fils d'Apollon & d'Anchiale, bâtit en Crete une ville qu'il appella de son nom. Servius assure la même chose, en expliquant la premiere égloque de Virgile où est ce vers:
Et rapidum Cretoe veniemus Oaxem. (D. J.)
