NOVEM - VIRS, s. m. (Hist. anc.) surnom donné aux archontes d'Athènes, parce qu'ils étoient au nombre de neuf. Il y a grande apparence que ce furent les Romains qui leur donnerent ce titre après la conquête d'Athènes; car ce nom est latin, tout semblable à ceux de triumvir, sextumvir, decemvir, &c. que les Romains tirolent du nombre des magistrats qu'ils désignoient par ce titre, & l'on sait qu'Athènes déchue de son ancienne puissance & soumise aux Romains, conserva toujours la liberté d'élire ses magistrats, & le droit de se gouverner selon ses lois. Enfin dans toute l'antiquité grecque on ne voit pas que le titre de novem - virs ait été donné aux archontes. Voyez Archontes.
