MAGNUS, a, um, (Géogr. anc.) Il faut remarquer ici sur ce mot latin, que les anciens appelloient magnum promontorium le cap d'Afrique nommé Deyrat - Lincyn par les Africains; & qu'ils ont donné le même nom au cap de Lisbonne. Ils appelloient magnum ostium, la grande embouchure, l'une des bouches du Gange. Ils donnoient le nom de magni campi à des plaines d'Afrique, au voisinage d'Utique; ils nommerent magnus portus, un port de la Grande - Bretagne, vis - à - vis l'île de Wigth, & magnus sinus, le grand golfe, une partie de l'Océan oriental, &c.
