MACPHÉLA, (Géog. sacrée.) c'est le lieu Cham, dont il est parlé dans la Genese, chap. xvij. vers. 23. & qu'on traduit ordinairement par caverne Macphéla. On pourroit traduire la caverne fermée. En arabe Macphéla signifie fermé, muré. La caverne Macphéla, achetée par Abraham pour y enterrer Sara sa femme, étoit apparemment son tombeau creusé dans le roc, & fermé exactement ou muré, de peur qu'on n'y entrât. On voit encore dans l'Orient des tombeaux fermés & murés. (D. J.)
