* INCONNU, adj. (Gram.) il ne se dit point des choses qu'on ne connoit point; car on ne dit rien de ce qu'on ne connoit pas, mais des choses qu'on connoit & des qualités qu'on y soupçonne. Ainsi nous voyons des effets dans la nature; nous ne doutons point qu'ils ne soient liés, mais la liaison nous en est inconnue. Nous voyons agir un de nos semblables, nous lui supposons un motif bon ou mauvais, mais il nous est inconnu. L'épithete inconnu se joint toûjours à quelque chose qu'on connoit.
