HOLY - ISLAND, (Géog.) Lindisfarnia, petite île d'Angleterre, sur la côte de Northumberland; l'air n'en est pas sain, ni le terroir fertile; sa plus grande ressource est la chasse & la pêche; mais le havre est assez bon, & défendu par un fort. Il y avoit autrefois dans cette île un monastere avec une église, qui avoit titre d'évêché, & qui fut ensuite transféré à Darham. Elle étoit aussi la retraite d'un grand nombre de solitaires; & c'est apparemment pour ces raisons, qu'on lui donne le nom de Holy - Island, qui signifie l'Isle - Sainte. Long. 15. 56. lat. 55. 40.
