* GATER, v. act. c'est occasionner quelque défaut dans une chose où l'on n'en remarquoit pas, où l'on en remarquoit moins. Il se prend au simple & au figuré. On gâte un tableau d'un grand maître, en le faisant retoucher par un mauvais artiste; on gâte une belle action, par quelque circonstance où l'on n'a pas montré toute la délicatesse possible; on gâte le métier, en ne soûtenant pas son ouvrage à un haut prix, ou en en développant inconsidérément le mystere.
