FURSTENWALD, (Géog.) petite ville d'Allemagne, dans la moyenne marche de Brandebourg, sur la Sprée, à 8 lieues O. de Francfort, sur l'Oder. Long. 32d 5'. lat. 52d. 23'.

Elle a produit deux savans illustres: Hoffman (Maurice) célebre medecin y naquit en 1621, & mourut en 1698; Mentzel (Chrétien) né à Furstenwald en 1622, mort en 1701, est fort connu des Botanistes. Il a laissé manuscrit 4 vol. in - fol. des choses naturelles du Brésil, & 10 vol. in - fol. aussi manuscrit, tirés du lexicon chinois, intitulés Caguey; il est à souhaiter que de tels ouvrages paroissent un jour.
