ESQUILIN, adj. (Hist. anc.) Le mont Esquilin est une des sept collines de l'ancienne Rome; c'est aujourd'hui le quartier de la montagne de sainte Marie majeure. Ce fut Servius Tullius qui l'enferma dans Rome. Il y avoit la porte esquiline, la tribu esquiline. C'est aux Esquilies que se faisoient les exécutions des criminels, & que leurs cadavres restoient exposés.
