CRANEQUIN ou PIÉ DE BICHE, s. m. (Hist. mod. & Art milit.) espece de bandage de fer qui se portoit à la ceinture, & dont on se servoit autrefois pour tendre l'arc, d'où l'on a fait le substantif cranequinier. Les cranequiniers étoient une sorte d'arbalétriers: il y en avoit à pié & à cheval; ils portoient des arbaletes legeres. Ces arbaletes furent d'abord de bois; on les fit ensuite de corne, & enfin d'acier. Le grand maître de l'artillerie a succédé à celui des arbalétriers & cranequiniers.
