CONCERTO, mot Italien francisé, en Musique, signifie une piece de symphonie faite pour être executée par tout un orchestre.
Il y a des concerto faits pour quelque instrument particulier qui joue seul de tems en tems avec un simple accompagnement, après quoi tout l'orchestre reprend, & la piece continue toûjours ainsi alternativement entre le même instrument & l'orchestre. C'est là ce qu'on appelle proprement concerto. Quant à ceux où tout se joue en choeur, & où nul instrument ne récite, les Italiens les appellent aussi symphonies. (S)
