CIRCASSIE, (Géog.) grand pays d'Asie situé entre le Wolga & le Don ou Tanaïs, borné par le Daghestan, le royaume de Caret, la Mingrelie, & la mer Noire. Les habitans professent une religion moitié chrétienne & moitié mahométane. Une partie de ce pays est soûmise à la Russie, l'autre est indépendante. Le commerce principal de la Circassie consiste en pelisses & fourrures, & en femmes qu'ils vendent aux Turcs & aux Persans; elles ont la réputation d'y être plus belles qu'en aucun pays de l'Asie.
