* CHECAIA, s. m. (Hist. mod.) Ce mot signifie proprement en langue Turque, second, ou lieutenant, & l'on en a fait à la Porte un nom commun à plusieurs officiers, lorsque l'importance de leur charge demandoit qu'ils eussent un second; c'est le second qu'on appelle un chicaia. Il y a trois principaux checaia; celui des janissaires, c'est à - peu - près un des lieutenans de l'aga, voyez Aga: celui de cuisine, c'est le second maître - d'hôtel du grand - seigneur: celui de l'écurie, c'est son second écuyer.
