CENTURION, s. m. (Hist. anc.) parmi les Romains, officier d'infanterie qui commandoit une centurie ou cent hommes. Voyez Centurie.

Le premier centurion de la premiere cohorte de chaque légion s'appelloit primipilus, primopilus, ou primi - pili - centurio, & quelquefois primus centurio. Il n'étoit sous le commandement d'aucun tribun, à la différence des autres, & il commandoit quatre centuries. Il gardoit l'étendart & l'aigle de la légion. C'est de - là qu'on l'appelloit primi - pilus.
