CANTHARUS, (Littérature.) c'est proprement le nom qu'on donnoir à la coupe dont Bacchus se servoit pour boire, ce qui fait juger qu'elle étoit de bonne mesure, gravis, pesante, comme dit Virgile, Pline, [p. 761] l. XXXIII. c. liij. reproche à Marius d'avoir bu dans une pareille coupe après la bataille qu'il gagna contre les Cimbres. (D. J.)
