BILLION, s. m. (Arithmet.) on donne ce nom en Arithmétique au chiffre qui occupe la dixieme place d'une suite horisontale de chiffres, en commençant de la droite vers la gauche, ainsi qu'on en est convenu dans la numération. Voyez Numération.

Dans le nombre 4320567827, composé de dix chiffres, le chiffre 4 qui est le dixieme en commençant par la droite, signifie quatre billions: or un billion vaut dix fois cent millions, de même qu'un million vaut dix fois cent mille, &c. suivant l'institution de la valeur locale des chiffres. (E)
