PYTHIEN, (Littérature.) la défaite du serpent Python, proche de la ville de Delphes, donna à Apollon le nom de Pithien, Pythius, & à la ville voisine de Delphes celui de Pytho. Horace appelle Apollon incola Pythius, pour marquer l'impression qu'il faisoit sur le coeur des prêtres dont il s'emparoit, pour prononcer ses oracles par leur organe: froena furente concutit, dit Virgile, & stimulos sub pectore vertit Apollo.
